The calling to live as an artist requires a commitment to create space...a place to expand into.  An opening of self occurs in both the narrow slivers and broad wedges of time alloted for creative expression.  The substance of self oozes out into these places, taking physical form in the dedicated space of the studio or kitchen table.  This substance, or essence, can be examined, admired, revised or destroyed.  The emotional experience of this process is part of the creation. 

Once a piece is complete, I allow space again for individuation of the creation from the creator.  This new entity now has a life of its own.  No longer “me” or “mine”, it is free to enter into its own relationships in the world. 

In the space of a passing glance or prolonged study, the viewer steps into relationship with art.  Within this space, the viewer may meet and recognize an aspect of self.  I believe that the moment of recognition holds an opportunity for healing.  Even an experience that might be labeled as negative, such as the stirring of unpleasant emotions, can at least be a moment of awareness.  By surrendering my own attachment to personal meaning in my artwork, a deeper, more universal truth can surface.
